Tso Kar – The White Lake of Himalayas

Tso Kar, meaning “White Lake” in Ladakhi, is a high-altitude salt lake located in the Changthang plateau of Ladakh. At around 15,280 feet (4,663 meters) above sea level, it gets its name from the white salt deposits that gather around its shores giving it a distinct and ghostly appearance.

Unlike the more popular lakes like Pangong or Tso Moriri, Tso Kar is wild, quiet, and remote. A true gem for travelers who want to see Ladakh’s raw and untouched nature.

The nomads, commonly known as Khampas, inhabit the Tso Kar area, and they make a living here by collecting the salt from the banks of Tso Kar Lake and selling it to the regions nearby.

The marshlands surrounding the lake supports a fascinating array of bird life; hence, making it extremely popular with bird watchers.

A Ramsar Wetland of Global Importance

In 2020, Tso Kar was designated a Ramsar site, recognizing it as a wetland of international ecological importance. It is one of the few places in Ladakh that attracts migratory birds and supports fragile high-altitude wildlife.

The Tso Kar basin includes both Tso Kar Lake (a saltwater body) and Startsapuk Tso (a nearby freshwater lake), creating a rare wetland system.

Wildlife at Tso Kar

Tso Kar is a birdwatcher’s paradise and an important breeding ground for several rare species, including:

  • Black-necked cranes – often seen nesting near the shore.
  • Bar-headed geese and ruddy shelducks.
  • Tibetan sandgrouse and various waders.

You may also spot kiangs (Tibetan wild asses), Himalayan marmots, foxes and possibly wolves or snow leopards, though sightings are rare.

Why Visit Tso Kar?

  • Explore a Ramsar-designated wildlife-rich wetland.
  • ✅ Experience salt plains, wide open valleys and silent beauty.
  • ✅ Less visited than other lakes—ideal for solitude and photography.
  • ✅ Ideal for travelers interested in nature, birds and remote places.
