Khardung La – Ride it, Struggle it, Celebrate it

Khardung La, often called Khardungla Pass is one of the most iconic landmarks in Ladakh. Located at an altitude of 17,982 feet (5,359 meters). It was long believed to be the highest motorable road in the world until Umling La recently claimed that title. Still, Khardung La remains a legendary destination for travelers, especially adventure motorcyclists. It is still known as the highest all weather motorable pass.

It connects Leh to the Nubra valley, making it not just a high point, but a gateway to some of Ladakh’s most remote and beautiful regions.

Why Is Khardung La Famous?

  • Historic Route
Khardung La was once part of an ancient trade route connecting Leh to Central Asia. Traders would use this pass to carry goods between India, China and beyond. Even today, you can feel the sense of crossing into a land beyond.
  • Military Significance
The road is maintained by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and is important for supplying Indian Army posts on the Siachen Glacier.
  • Biker’s Bucket List
For many riders across India and the world, crossing Khardung La is a dream. It’s often included in motorcycle expeditions and high-altitude driving challenges.

What to Expect at the Top

  • Snow-covered peaks, even in summer
  • A colorful army-run cafe and souvenir shop
  • A Buddhist stupa and prayer flags fluttering in the cold wind
  • A signboard proudly displaying “You are at the world’s highest all weather motorable road”

Khardung La offers the thrill of extreme altitude with dramatic views and a deep sense of achievement.
