Tso Moriri – Ladakh’s Sacred Lake and Ramsar Wetland

Tso Moriri, also known as Lake Moriri, is a calm and beautiful high-altitude lake in the Changthang region of Ladakh. Sitting at an elevation of about 15,075 feet (4,595 meters). It is the largest high-altitude lake entirely within Indian territory, stretching about 28 kilometers long and 5-8 kilometers wide.

This stunning lake is more than just a scenic spot. It is a protected Ramsar wetland site. Means it is officially recognized as a wetland of international importance especially for its role in supporting rare wildlife and birds.

Where is Tso Moriri?

Tso Moriri is located in the remote Rupshu Valley, around 220 km southeast of Leh. Near the Indo-China border. The drive to the lake passes through wide open spaces, small Ladakhi villages and often feels like traveling through another world.

A Ramsar Wetland of International Importance

In 2002, Tso Moriri was declared a Ramsar site because of its importance to migratory birds, high-altitude wildlife and fragile Himalayan ecosystems. The lake and its surrounding wetlands are home to:

  • Black-necked cranes – globally threatened and seen nesting here.
  • Bar-headed geese, brahminy ducks and many rare species of birds.
  • Kiangs (Tibetan wild asses), marmots and occasional sightings of snow leopards.

This makes it a must-visit place for bird watchers and nature lovers, but also a location that requires responsible and respectful tourism.

What Makes Tso Moriri Special?

  • Peaceful & Less Crowded
Unlike Pangong Lake, Tso Moriri is much quieter. It’s a great place for those who want to escape the crowd and enjoy raw natural beauty.
  • Culturally Significant
The lake is sacred to the Ladakhi people, and nearby Korzok Monastery is an important spiritual site. The village of Korzok, right beside the lake, is home to Changpa nomads who follow traditional ways of life.
  • Changing Colors
The lake reflects the sky and changes colors from blue to green to grey depending on light and time of day. Sunrises and sunsets here are unforgettable.
