Diskit – The Cultural Heart of Nubra Valley

Diskit is the main town of Nubra Valley and one of the oldest inhabited places in the region. Known for its ancient Diskit Monastery and towering Maitreya Buddha statue. It serves as both a spiritual center and a perfect base for exploring Nubra.

Set along the Shyok River and surrounded by arid mountains, Diskit offers a quiet and peaceful charm that blends tradition, nature and stunning Himalayan views.

What Makes Diskit Special?

Diskit Monastery (Deskit Gompa)

This is the oldest and largest monastery in Nubra, built in the 14th century by Changzem Tserab Zangpo, a disciple of Tsongkhapa (founder of the Gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism). The monastery sits on a hill, with views stretching across the valley. Inside, you’ll find ancient murals, a prayer hall and Buddhist relics. The calm energy here is felt deeply by every visitor.

Maitreya Buddha Statue

Just below the monastery stands a 32-meter (106 ft) tall statue of Maitreya Buddha, facing the Shyok River. It was built in 2010 to promote peace and protect the village. The statue is one of the most iconic sights in all of Ladakh.

Diskit Gompa and statue of Chamba

According to a local story, a fiery demon once lived in the place where the monastery stands today and wrecked vengeance on local people. After being killed by gods, the demon kept coming back which can be stopped only by the monastery’s monks. Most probably, this legend is the reference to the famous invasion of Mongol leader Dalucha which was stopped in its tracks by the fierce resistance of the people from inside the valley.
