Umling La Now Opened to Foreign Tourists – Ride to the Highest Road on Earth

🌍 The roof of the world is now open to everyone

In a landmark move for adventure travel in India, Umling La Pass – the world’s highest motorable road at 19,024 feet (5,798 meters) is now officially open to foreign tourists.

For years, Umling La was accessible only to Indian nationals due to its location in a sensitive border zone near the Indo-China line. But as of 2024, foreign riders can finally experience this restricted route with permits.

This change opens a new chapter in high-altitude motorcycle touring, offering international riders the chance to ride through Ladakh’s most extreme and awe-inspiring terrain.

What is Umling La and why is it special?

Located in the Demchok sector of southeastern Ladakh, Umling La is not just another Himalayan pass. It holds the official record for being the highest motorable road in the world, surpassing even the legendary Khardung La and Road to Uturuncu, Bolivia.

Built by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) under the Project Himank initiative, Umling La was completed to improve access to remote villages and support India’s border infrastructure. Today, it’s become an iconic destination for extreme adventure seekers.

“At this altitude, the air is thin, the roads are silent and the feeling is surreal. Umling La is not a place you visit. It’s a place you conquer.”

How to Reach Umling La

Most riders include Umling La as part of a longer Ladakh tour, typically starting from Leh. The most scenic and well-tested route is:

Leh → Hanle → Photi La → Umling La → Demchok sector (return via same route)

⚠️ Important: Travelers must be properly acclimatized. Attempting Umling La without spending at least 2–3 nights at high altitudes (like Hanle or Tso Moriri) is dangerous and discouraged.
